The Lord of the Rings was an amazing series for the big screen, and a fair amount of the drama came from an amazing landscape that it was filmed in. In the southern part of the southern island of New Zealand lies Queenstown and the Remarkables. In the very center of this jungle of mountains and mist are a couple hill tops with 360 degree views of this so called “Middle Earth”. I created this image adjacent to the location where the famous scene was filmed of Gandalf riding with the escaping refugees to Rohan. It had been cloudy most of the day and the wind was blowing over 30 knots, but there was a slight depression where I could get out of the wind just enough to compose the field of tussock grasses, Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables and the mad sky.
